► Is Structured Phonics Important and Appropriate for All of My Students, Even More Advanced Readers?

Even those of you who already understand the effectiveness of a structured phonics approach may still question whether it is appropriate for your whole class. Why use it as one component of core instruction for all students? Why not use it only as an intervention for below-grade-level readers?

It is true that some students require less explicit phonics instruction to learn to read, but a strong foundational skills program should encourage, challenge, and engage all students. Most programs typically include approximately 20 to 30 minutes per day of on-grade-level instruction on foundational skills. This can benefit all students in these crucial ways:

» Capitalizing on the reciprocal relationship between reading and spelling (decoding and encoding)

» Strengthening all students’ vocabulary and comprehension

» Encouraging the use of cueing systems, particularly visual cueing
